Corrector Cell Frame on Lathe

PHOTO: Corrector Cell Frame on Lathe
The aluminum ring on the lathe was being machined to produce the main frame for the corrector lens cell assembly. It is the part colored in red in the 3D rendering that can be seen in my design article on the telescope. The disk seen laying on the lathe was cut out from the center of a larger disk to make the ring. The same type of operation will be performed many times to produce the various parts that will make up the corrector assembly and primary mirror mount. Cullen Bennett of Arizona machined this for me in his home based machine shop. This photo was taken 19 January 2000 with an Olympus D-600L digital camera.
